Whoseshortandnarrowvergèdshade
Doesprudentlytheirtoilsupbraid,
Whileallflow"rsandalltreesdoclose
Toweavethegarlandsofrepose.
FairQuiet,haveifoundtheehere,
Andinnocence,thysisterdear!
Mistakenlong,isoughtyouthen
inbusycompaniesofmen.
Yoursacredplants,ifherebelow,
Onlyamongtheplantswillgrow.
Societyisallbutrude,
Tothisdelicioussolitude.
Nowhitenorredwaseverseen
Soam"rousasthislovelygreen.
Fondlovers,cruelastheirflame,
Cutinthesetreestheirmistress"name.
Little,alas,theyknow,orheed,
Howfarthesebeautieshersexceed!
Fairtrees!Wheres"e"eryourbarksiwound,
Nonameshallbutyourownbefound.
Whenwehaverunourpassion"sheat,
Lovehithermakeshisbestretreat.
Thegods,thatmortalbeautychase,
Stillinatreedidendtheirrace.
ApollohuntedDaphneso,
Onlythatshemightlaurelgrow.
AndPandidafterSyrinxspeed,
Notasanymph,butforareed.
Whatwondrouslifeisthisilead!
Ripeapplesdropaboutmyhead;
Thelusciousclustersofthevine
Uponmymouthdocrushtheirwine;
Thenectarene,andcuriouspeach,
intomyhandsthemselvesdoreach;
Stumblingonmelons,asipass,
Ensnaredwithflowers,ifallongrass.
Meanwhilethemind,frompleasureless,
Withdrawsintoitshappiness:
Themind,thatoceanwhereeachkind
Doesstraightitsownresemblancefind,
Yetitcreates,transcendingthese,
Farotherworlds,andotherseas,
Annihilatingallthat"smade
Toagreenthoughtinagreenshade.
Hereatthefountain"sslidingfoot,
Oratsomefruit-tree"smossyroot,
Castingthebody"svestaside,
Mysoulintotheboughsdoesglide:
Therelikeabirditsits,andsings,
Thenwhets,andcombsitssilverwings;
And,tillpreparedforlongerflight,
Wavesinitsplumesthevariouslight.
Suchwasthehappygarden-state,
Whilemantherewalkedwithoutamate:
Afteraplacesopure,andsweet,
Whatotherhelpcouldyetbemeet!
But"twasbeyondamortal"sshare
Towandersolitarythere:
Twoparadises"twereinone
Toliveinparadisealone.
Howwelltheskilfulgardenerdrew
Offlowersandherbsthisdialnew,
Wherefromabovethemildersun
Doesthroughafragrantzodiacrun;
And,asitworks,theindustriousbee
Computesitstimeaswellaswe.
Howcouldsuchsweetandwhilesomehours
Bereckonedbutwithherbsandflowers!
