igraduatedfromtheuniversitywithacademichonorsandproceededtotheyalelawschool,whereireceivedmyjddegreein1980.upongraduationfromlawschool,ibecameapracticinglawyerwiththewashington,dc,firmofward,hardraker,andross.
in1981,iwasintroducedtonowjudgethomasbyamutualfriend.judgethomastoldmethathewasanticipatingapoliticalappointment,andheaskedifiwouldbeinterestedinworkingwithhim.hewas,infact,appointedasassistantsecretaryofeducationforcivilrights.afterhehadtakenthatpost,heaskedifiwouldbecomehisassistant,andiacceptedthatposition.
inmyearlyperiodthere,ihadtwomajorprojects.thefirstwasanarticleiwroteforjudgethomas"signatureontheeducationofminoritystudents.thesecondwastheorganizationofaseminaronhigh-riskstudentswhichwasabandonedbecausejudgethomastransferredtotheeeocwherehebecamethechairmanofthatoffice.
duringthisperiodatthedepartmentofeducation,myworkingrelationshipwithjudgethomaswaspositive.ihadagooddealofresponsibilityandindependence.ithoughtherespectedmyworkandthathetrustedmyjudgment.afterapproximatelythreemonthsofworkingthere,heaskedmetogooutsociallywithhim.
