intheefforttorectifymattersofcommonconcern,wehavesomethingtoleanon.therecentperiod-andinparticularthelastsixweeksofourpeacefulrevolution-hasshowntheenormoushuman,moralandspiritualpotential,andthecivicculturethatslumberedinoursocietyundertheenforcedmaskofapathy.wheneversomeonecategoricallyclaimedthatwewerethisorthat,ialwaysobjectedthatsocietyisaverymysteriouscreatureandthatitisunwisetotrustonlythefaceitpresentstoyou.iamhappythatiwasnotmistaken.everywhereintheworldpeoplewonderwherethosemeek,humiliated,skepticalandseeminglycynicalcitizensofczechoslovakiafoundthemarvelousstrengthtoshakethetotalitarianyokefromtheirshouldersinseveralweeks,andinadecentandpeacefulway.andletusask:wheredidtheyoungpeoplewhoneverknewanothersystemgettheirdesirefortruth,theirloveoffreethought,theirpoliticalideas,theirciviccourageandcivicprudence?howdidithappenthattheirparents--theverygenerationthathadbeenconsideredlost--joinedthem?howisitthatsomanypeopleimmediatelyknewwhattodoandnoneneededanyadviceorinstruction?
