GrowingupintheU.S.,asafirstgenerationChinese-American,wasnotaneasyexperience.However,ifeelthatmyuniqueexperienceshavegivenmeinsightssintosbothculturesthathavehelpedmakemearicherperson.
igrewupinthelittletownofUnionCity,NewJersey.ThisworkingcLAssareahasbeensettledpredominatelybyimmigrantsofLatinAmericaandisconvenientlylocatedacrosstheHudsonRiverfromNewYorkCity.igrewupbeingoneofasmallminorityofAsianindividualsinthisarea.Myfamilycameheretomakealivingasblue-collarworkersowningaChineserestaurant.MostfamiliesinChinaidealizeAmericaasthisgreat"GoldMountain,"alandofopportunityswheresanyonecanmaketheirfortuneiftheyworkhardenough.OneisnotconstrainedbyfamilialtiesandsocietalcLAss,whichpreventsonefromadvancingintraditionalAsiancultures.
Myliferevolvedaroundthisrestaurant.Myparentsworked12-hourdaysjusttomakeacomfortablelivingtheycouldneverhaveattainedinChina.Bothmyparentshadtomakesacrificestotheirfamilyanddidnotreceiveaneducation.Unfortunatelyafter8yearsoflaboriousworkandencroachingcompetitioninthearea,myparentsdecidedtoselltheirrestaurantandfindworkinNewYorkCityinthehotelindustry.
inthemeantime,myparentsheavilyreinforcedhardworkandeducationsothatmysiblingsandiwouldn"tfallsintosthesamepatternoflostopportunitythattheyhad.Theyalsoreinforcedobeisanceanddecorumintheirchildren.Asaresultoftheirstrictupbringing,whenicamesintosmyowninmylateteensandearly20s,irebelledagainstthem.inolongerwantedtobeaminionfollowingthewordsofmyparents.iwantedtohavemyownidentity.Whatididn"trealizewasthatthecoreoftheChinesefamilywasinstilledcenturiesagobythetenetsofConfucianism,whichplacedthefocusonthefamily.ThesetraditionalconceptswentagainstallmyindividualisticideasfrommyAmericancLAsses.
Whenireachedcollegeageandwasleavingforthefirsttimeoutoftheprotectivegraspofmyparents,ididn"tknowwhattodowithmyself.Allmylife,ihadmyparentstellmewhatishoulddoornottodowithmylife.Theydidn"twantmetogotocollegeoruniversitybutinsteadtobusinessschoolswheresicouldgetanassociate"sdegreein2yearsandenterthejobforceasasecretary.Theniwouldbeabletoprovideforthemsintostheiroldage.idecidedagainstthiscourseofactionandwasblacklistedbythemforawhile.Withtime,ourrelationshipgrewwithunderstanding.Theyunderstandthat,asAsian-Americans,wearedifferentandouruniquenessshouldbecelebrated.WehavetheopportunitiestheydreamedofforthemselvesasimmigrantstotheU.S.
