TheideaofnurturingtheChineseelitehasbeenhotlydebatedinthepress.itisunderstoodthattheGovernmentleadersraisedthisissuewithtwomainobjectives:a)TheelitearetomeetthepracticalneedsofoureconomyasourtradeandindustryhaveexpandedtotheChinesespeakingareasinEastAsiaand;b)TheelitearerequiredinordertocarryonanddevelopChinesecultureandtraditionsinoursociety.TheChinese-educatedgenerallywelcomethisideaandtheyoungbilingualgenerationalsosupportsit.But,therearesome,albeitasmallnumberinmyopinion,whohaveexpressedcontraryviews.ThiscanbeseenclearlyfromalettercontributedbyareaderintheStraitsTimesonMay26.
Frommyexperiencewithpeoplefromdifferenteducationalbackground,icansurmisethatthewriterisEnglish-educated.ShemaynotbetoofamiliarwiththeChineselanguageandculture,andprobablyhaslittleunderstandingofthehistoryofoureducationsystemandthechangesinourlanguagepolicies.iunderstandherconcernsandshallattempttoallayherfearswiththefollowing:
Firstly,thekindofChineseelitewehaveinmindisdefinitelynotchauvinistic.Wecannotacceptanyformofchauvinism,beitChineseorEnglish.WeexpectourChineseelitetobeproficientnotonlyinbothChineseandEnglish,andpossessadepthofknowledgeofbothEasternandWesterncultures,butalsohaveagoodknowledgeofandrespectfortheculturesoftheminorityraces.inthefieldoflearning,theyshouldnotbenarrow-mindedChinesespecialists,butbroad-mindedpeoplewhoareknowledgeableaboutotherfieldsoflearningaswell.Moreimportantly,theyoughttohaveabroadculturalvisionandaworldview.TheoutstandinggraduatesofourSAPschoolsandothersecondaryschools,afterreceivingspecialisedtrainingintertiaryinstitutions,canbecometheidealChineseelitewhoarecertainlynoChinesechauvinists.
Secondly,thoseofuswhoareChinese-educatedarefullyawarethatalthoughChineseisthelargestethnicgroupinSingapore,weareamulti-racial,multi-culturalnation,andourfutureSingaporeanculturewillneverbepurelyChinese.Likeafabricwovenwithadiversityofcolourfulstrandsofthreads,oursocietycontainsrichculturalheritagewhichhailsfromEurope,China,indiaandtheMalayworld.Weliveinacommunitywheredifferentculturesinteract,weabsorbandlearnfromoneanother"sfinetraditions.inourperception,ourfuturesocietywillnotbeameltingpotdominatedbyaparticularculture,butapotpourriinwhichalldifferentculturescanbepreservedanddevelopedfully.
Finally,imightaddthatibelievethattheChineseelitecanonlybesuccessfulandcontinuetodevelopwhentheyarenurturedintheabove-mentionedwayandinthecontextofourmodernSingapore.
